INTELLIGENCE GATHERING AND DESERTERS AT BARCELONA. Nelson orders Captain Durban in the Ambuscade [emended throughout from Captain Mowbray and the Active] to 'Stand into Barcelona Roads but not to anchor' in order to pass a letter to the British Consul [J.B. Gibert] and to 'get any news which may be stirring'; 'There are some French Men at Barcelona who may want to come to me upon some pretence or other but Captain Durban is Not to bring them. If any Deserters are taken up Capt Dn. will bring them, and if required he may answer that their lives will be spared but to pledge himself no farther'. A postscript explains the change of recipient, 'Active being put in Quarantine'.
The letter to Consul Gibert which Durban was to carry into Barcelona, published in the Dispatches and Letters (vol. 6, 1846, pp.204-5), reveals that the deserters referred to are four seaman from the Bomb Vessel Acheron, who had deserted in the Bay of Rosas on the 17th.
