Lot Essay

This oval pier glass reflects the new fashion for the Roman medallion. It is rather naively composed of S and C-scrolls surmounted by architectural ornament and urn, all very flatly carved, which is a recurrent feature on the cresting of Irish mirrors of this date. A closely related mirror bearing the label of Francis and John Booker was sold Christie's, London, 7 May 2009, lot 40 (£11,250).
