Lot Essay

Silver and brass trompe l'oeil cigar boxes engraved to imitate original wooden boxes were fashionable in Russia from circa 1870 to the early 20th Century. The H. Upmann brand dates back to 1844, when Herman Upmann, a German banker, began using specially imprinted boxes of cigars to promote his bank.
