Lot Essay

The Emperor Trajan's monumental column commemorating his Dacian campaigns is one of Rome's most celebrated antiquities; and such models, executed in bronze or colourful marbles have been popular since the l8th century (P.Morel et al.'La Colonna Traiana', Rome, 1988; F.Haskell and N.Penny, Taste and the Antique, London, 1981, p.21, fig 26).

A similar pair of marmo giallo antico columns were sold, Park West, The Property of a Private Collector, Christie's London, 22 May 2003, lot 2.
