A NORTH ITALIAN ETCHED CLOSE-HELMET
THIRD QUARTER 16TH CENTURY
With one-piece skull pierced and shaped to the ear on each side, prominent roped comb pierced at the base with two pairs of lining-points, tapering conical plume-holder at the base of the neck, visor with vision slits locked to the upper bevor by a spring-catch operated by the lifting-peg, the upper bevor pierced with circular breaths on the right side arranged in a roundel, lower bevor shaped to the chin, the bevors and visor all pivoted at the same points, and lower edge of lower bevor and skull formed as a hollow roped flange to rotate on a gorget, decorated throughout with broad etched bands involving flower-heads, stars and foliage, later gold-coloured finish
