The inscription above the peri reads, parizad, 'Born of the Fairies'.
A series of drawings of peri such as this were executed in the mid 16th century. They are often depicted wearing a leafy hat, as here. A very fine example of the genre is contained in an album full of other depictions of peri in the Topkapi Saray Library (H2162.f.8r., The Age of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, exhibition catalogue, Sydney, 1990, no.124, p.127 and New York, 1987, nos.47-48b, pp.102-03). Another example was offered in thesse Rooms, 29 October 2003, lot 156.
