Lot Essay

The grand houses of the Garden Quarter and French Quarter of New Orleans provided a rich resource for Kelly. At the time of Kelly's visit the country was locked in a struggle for civil rights, but there is little hint of this in his work. Instead Kelly's paintings focus upon the splendour of the past; columned mansions, frilly balconies and tram lines all act as a melancholic tokens of history.
