Lot Essay

Kelly flew to West Africa on a commission to bring back location studies, whilst his 1956 one man show at Arthur Jeffress was runnning. Sierra Leone and Ghana offered new and exciting landscapes and subject matter which continued to inspire Kelly's work after his visit. Three African subjects were included in the subsequent 1959 one man show at Arthur Jeffress, with an emphasis on railways and industry.
