Lot Essay

An autograph painting by Jacopo da Valenza with the same subject and identical architecture and landscaping in the background is in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (inv. no. 26.141). The composition of a picture that can possibly be attributed to Giovanni Bellini in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no. A302), is even closer to the present lot and shows the exact same architecture in the right background as well.
