AGRICOLA, Georgius (1494-1555). De re metallica. -De animantibus subterraneis. Basel: Hieronymous Froben and Nicholas Episcopius, March 1561.

2° (311 x 208mm). Over 270 woodcuts by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch and perhaps Blasius Weffring, many full-page, two cuts joined as folding plate and bound after k1, printer's device on title, repeated on final verso, woodcut ornamental and historiated initials. With blank \Ka\k6. (Occasional faint spotting, faint dampstain in one quire.) 18th-century red morocco gilt (light wear at corners). Provenance: Paul Girardot de Prefond (booklabel; sale 1757).

Second Latin edition of the first systematic treatise on mining and metallurgy, which remained the standard work on the subject for over two centuries. The fine series of woodcuts depicting a wide variety of mining techniques and processes, engineering and equipment in action, are integral to Agricola's text and were used for over a century in subsequent editions. The present is a handsomely bound, fresh copy with distinguished provenance. Adams A-350; Dibner Heralds 88; Durling 53; PMM 79 (1556 ed.); Wellcome 68.
