DARWIN, Charles (1809-1882). Journal of Researches into the Geology and Natural History of the various countries visited by H.M.S. Beagle, under the command of Captain Fitzroy, R.N. from 1832 to 1836. London: Henry Colburn, 1839.
8° (235 x 148mm). 2 folding engraved maps, 4 wood-engraved illustrations, 16pp. plus 1-leaf of adverts. at end. (Very occasional small spot, maps offsetting and with some foxing.) Original brownish purple ribbed cloth decorated in blind, spine gilt lettered, uncut (a little sunfading, tiny tear at head of spine, old shelf label at foot of spine).
FIRST EDITION, second issue, of Darwin's first published book. The five-year voyage of the Beagle, undertaken to chart the South American coast, is considered 'the most important event in Darwin's intellectural life and in the history of biological science' (DSB III, p.566). According to Freeman, it is the work most often read and 'stands second only to On the Origin of Species as the most often printed'. The first issue forms the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M.S. Adventure and Beagle, edited by Captain Robert FitzRoy (1839); the second issue was the first appearance of the work in its own right. Freeman 11.
