Half-titles, engraved titles, two portraits of the author, 17 plates by John Leech and George Cruikshank (a few imprints shaved) and illustrations in text. 4-page publisher's advertisements at end of vol. II. (Occasional pale spotting.) 20th-century blue morocco gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut, original cloth bound in at end of each volume, by Riviere. Provenance: H. Harvey Frost (bookplates) sold Sotheby's, London, 13 November 1969, lot 10; purchased from Charles W. Traylen, Guildford, 18 November 1971; Abel E. Berland (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of each volume, with the blank page 236 and very rare "To the Critical Reader slip" and p.71, line 23 reading "Ralph de Shurland" in vol. I; no errata on verso of contents leaf in vol. II; p.350, line 2 reads "topot" in vol. III. Bound in after the first issue page 236 in vol. I is the leaf that was afterwards substituted. Cohn 50. (3)
