BINDING -- BIBLE, in French: La Sainte Bible. Paris: Plassan for Th. Desoer, 1819. 8° (229 x 143mm). Half-title. (Some spotting.) Contemporary Paris romantic binding by E. Vogel, signed at spine foot and with his ticket on rear flyleaf: purple straight-grained morocco tooled in gilt and blind and with green and red on-lays, central elongated lozenge, rocaille design at sides, red and green diamond design in spine compartments, second compartment lettered, pale blue textured endpapers, pink and cream silk headbands, gilt edges (faint rubbing at extremities, slight wear at top of upper joint). Provenance: Librairie Charles Mary (ticket).
Although little personally is known of Vogel, he was binding for imperial libraries by 1814, resident at Paris from 1826, and he was particularly skilled at mosaique work, in which 'Vogel fait preuve de matrise, de technique et d'invention décorative' (Culot p. 571). The Descamps-Scrive collection contained 30 examples of his work. The present example dates from 1832-49 during his tenure at rue de Four.
