BINDING -- BERNIS, F.J de P., Cardinal de (1715-94). Oeuvres. Paris: G. Doyen for Delangle, Prodhomme & Cie, 1825. 8° (222 x 134mm). Author portrait on india paper mounted. Extra-illustrated with portrait by Le Mire after Callet and 5 plates before letters from the Didot 1797 edition, finely hand-coloured, and another engraved author portrait. (Occasional light spotting or browning.) Contemporary Paris romantic mosaique binding by E. Vogel, signed at foot of spine and with his ticket on rear flyleaf: purple straight-grained morocco gilt, flat spine and sides elaborately gilt to a romantic design with red, pale green, bright green, citron, and salmon on-lays, apricot textured endpapers, pastel silk headbands, gilt edges (very slight rubbing at extremities). Provenance: Robert Hoe (sale NY 1911, lot 256; booklabel) -- Edouard Rahir (sale Paris, 4-6 May 1938, lot 1890; booklabel).
