Contemporary French romantic binding by René Simier, signed at spine foot: red straight-grained morocco gilt, double rose-window design with black, green, and citron on-lays, border of elongated columns and corner arabesques, flat spine similarly tooled, black morocco labels at head and foot, gilt turn-ins, green glazed endpapers, multi-coloured silk headbands, gilt edges. A FINE ROMANTIC BINDING BY SIMIER, FROM THE LIBRARY OF THE DUCHESSE DE BERRY. Daughter of Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies, the duchesse de Berry was a patron of the arts and avid bibliophile; her library at Rosny was fabled for its rich holdings. Owing to political intrigue, she was forced to leave France, eventually dying at Brunnsee in 1870. Simier bound another copy of this same edition (cf. Descamps-Scrive sale, lot 108).
