AN EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN CORE-FORMED GLASS OINOCHOE
CIRCA MID 4TH-EARLY 3RD CENTURY B.C.
Black in color, the ovoid body with straight sides and a downturned taper, the shoulders rounded, with a slightly tapering cylindrical neck and a trefoil mouth, on a circular pad base, the body with opaque yellow, white, turquoise and red marvered threads wound spirally around the body and tooled into a zigzag pattern, yellow spiral trailing around the neck, a yellow trail on the mouth and exterior of the foot, the vertical strap handle arching from the shoulder to the rim

Lot Essay

The present example can be classified as Grose's Class II:A, form II:3, with oinochoai often of exceptional scale. For a similar example in dark blue with upturned festoons, see fig. 76, p. 118 in Grose, The Toledo Museum of Art, Early Ancient Glass.
