A PAIR OF GREEK GOLD SPHINX EARRINGS
HELLENISTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 3RD-2ND CENTURY B.C.
Each in the form of a sphinx seated on a trapezoidal plinth, her sickle-shaped wings upraised, the feathers finely incised, a modius with incised rays atop her center-parted hair, a loop at the back, adorned with incised bands that cross her chest, encircling her breasts, two rings of beaded wire at the back with a suspension loop below, the tail doubling as the tapering earhook, ribbed toward the bottom
