Lot Essay

The two main scenes depicted on this tankard were carved after two different paintings: the Nymph carried by a satyr was carved after Nicholas Poussin's painting of circa 1635 entitled Nymph, satyr, faun and cupids in the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie, Kassel.

The other side has been carved after Peter Paul Rubens masterpiece the Drunken Silenus, in the Alte Pinkaothek, Munich.
