As well as combining many classic North Country features, this finely made tallboy carries the name and residence of its original owner. In the 1770s Gillows of Lancaster sometimes labelled their best pieces in this way, and often went to the extra expense of fully panelling the back. The architectural design of the present tallboy recalls many of their late 18th-century clock cases and may have been made to match a longcase clock.
