Lot Essay

From a service made for Bengt Ribbing (1686-1741), governor of Gothenberg and Bohus 1630-41, and Ulrika Eleanora Piper (1698-1754) who married in 1718. Its unusual pattern may have been inspired by Christian Precht (1706-79) who designed a related service for Count Axel Sparre, his drawing surviving at the castle of Maltesharm in Skania. (See M. Beurdeley, China Trade Porcelain, pp. 117-118.) A smaller dish from the service in the collection of Khalil Rizk was sold Sotheby's, New York, 25 April 2008, lot 39.
