The arched doors, thick glazing bars that are purposely unaligned with the shelves, cockbead mouldings and absence of any significant brassware suggest an early date. The frontispiece of a contemporary publication, The Ladies' Library (1714) illustrates a similar bookcase to the present example. Another related oak bookcase (1710-40) with similar arched doors and thick glazing bars is included in Adam Bowett, Early Georgian Furniture 1715-1740, Woodbridge, 2009, pp. 132-133.
