Lot Essay

This drawing and lot 15 were originally part of a sketchbook used by van Goyen around 1650-51 which included at least 270 pages. Another view of Arnhem, a city in the eastern Netherlands, seen from a closer vantage point was on folio 84 of the same sketchbook (Beck, op. cit., no. 847/84). The view is taken from the left bank of the Rhine and one can recognize on the right the Grote Kerk and St. Walburgskerk.
