THE GRAND DUCAL WORKSHOPS ESTABLISHED IN FLORENCE AT THE END OF THE 16TH CENTURY BEGAN A LONG TRADITION OF MAGNIFICENT HARDSTONE CREATIONS. DUING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, DESPITE A PERIOD OF DECLINE, A GROUP OF HIGHLY SKILLED STONEWORKERS SUCH AS GIOVANI BATTISTA GIORGI, EDOARDO MARCHIONNI AND PAOLO RICCI CONTINUED TO WORK ON SOPHISTICATED PIECES, INTERPRETING THE ELECTIC TASTE OF THE PERIOD IN THEIR CREATIONS.
