Lot Essay

These wall lights featuring têtes de beliers or ram's heads are designed in the fashionable gôut grec of the 1760s and early 1770s. Similar wall-lights are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer/P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p.186, 3.9. A pair of this model with three branches, like the present set dating from the last quarter of the 19th century, sold Christie's, London, 1 October 2002, lot 394 (£16,730).
