TAYLOR, George Ledwell (1788-1873) -- Cresy, Edward. The Architectural Antiquities of Rome. London: James Moyes, 1821. 2 volumes, 2° (515 x 364mm). Half-titles, 129 engraved and lithographed plates. (Some plates with tears and repairs, others remounted, occasional browning, staining and spotting.) Contemporary half calf, gilt arms (worn, front covers detached).
FIRST EDITION. The impressive plates, most of which are by Taylor and Cresy, are numbered I to CXXX, but plate CV was never issued. They include engraved views, measured details, plans, sections and elevations. The subjects are various, from the arches of Titus, Septimius Severus, Trajan and Costantine, to Rome's most famous monuments such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Fori Imperiali. The book was rediscovered in the later part of the 19th-century and republished in 1874 by Lockwood. RIBA 3250. (2)
