Lot Essay

A very similar red lacquer hat stand of comparable height (29.5 cm.) dated to the Qing dynasty in the collection of the British Museum, is illustrated in Hai-Wai Yi-Chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections: Lacquerware, Taipei, 1987, p. 170. Another example, catalogued as a crown rack and with a gilt-bronze finial in openwork at the top, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 46 - Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, p. 73, fig. 49. See, also, a pair of carved cinnabar lacquer hat stands sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 27 May 2009, lot 1848.
