Lot Essay

These unusual figures appear to be related to, but are earlier in date, than the Ming dynasty stucco figures of similarly dressed bodhisattvas in the Shuanglin Temple, illustrated in Buddhist Sculpture of Shanxi Province, Beijing, 1991, pl. 172. See, also, the closely related pair of stucco bodhisattvas, also of Yuan date, sold in these rooms, 21 September 2000, lot 199.
