A SMALL GILT-BRONZE MODEL OF A STUPA
18TH CENTURY
Raised on a stepped square base with pairs of lions cast on each side of the waist, the sides of the stupa cast with masks suspending beaded garlands and set on one side with a framed reverse-painted glass image of Buddha below the ribbed spire flanked by foliate scrolls below a canopy and 'jewel' finial, with copper base plate engraved with a double vajra

Lot Essay

The shape of this small stupa appears to be based on those of larger size, such as the pair of much larger gilt-copper stupas on their original stands, in the Pavilion of Raining Flowers in the Forbidden City, Beijing, see Cultural Relics of Tibetan Buddhism Collected in the Qing Palace, Beijing, 1998, p. 250.
