FIRST EDITION, formally announcing the ratification of the 1828 border treaty between the U.S. and Mexico, based on Melish's map of the United States and an earlier treaty with Spain which fixed the boundary along the Sabine River. The U.S. delayed ratifying the treaty for four years, and they delayed surveying the boundary even longer in the hopes of claiming Texas. This insistence on annexing what was Mexican territory was the precipitating cause of the Mexican War. "The Mexican War (1846-48) stemmed in part from diplomatic ineptness during the 1830s in the handling of Mexican-U.S. relations..." (Oxford Companion to American History, p. 579).
