A SILVER BUTTERFIELD DIAL
Chapotot, circa 1700
three hour scales for 40°, 45°, 50°, the outer IIII-XI-VIII divided to quarter-hour, the inner two 5-12-7 divided to half-hour, signed CHAPATOT A PARIS, foliage motif, the engraving with niello infill, folding bird pointer gnomon, four point compass rose, the reverse with latitudes for 20 cities, in original black leather case with green felt lining.

Lot Essay

It is possible that the Astronomer Royal owned this dial: a 17th century boxwood quadrant from the collection has a secure provenance. Alternatively, a later member of the family could have acquired it as a curiosity.
