The table is directly based on a design by the carver/designer Matthias Lock, who worked together with Thomas Chippendale but also produced his own 'picturesque' pattern books for wood carvers. This design appears in his A New Book of Ornaments of 1752 (pl. 2), published in conjunction with H. Copland, which subsequently earned him praise 'as the best Draftsman in that way that had ever been in England'.
