Of typical form with single-edged curved watered-steel blade with engraved gold inlaid cartouche with the name of Fath 'Ali Shah Qajar and date, with further maker's inscription cartouche, floral gilt overlay decoration on crossbar and on fittings on leather covered scabbard, hilt with restoration

Lot Essay

The inscription on the gold medallion reads, al-sultan abu'l-sayf fath'ali shah qajar 1227, 'Abu'l-Sayf Fath'ali Shah Qajar 1227 (1812-13)'. In the cartouche below, 'amal-e sadiq isfahani, 'The work of Sadiq Isfahani'.

A 17th century sword by Sadiq Isfahani is published in Bashir Mohamed, The Arts of the Muslim Knight, 2008, no. 52.
