Lot Essay

Helmut Newton drew on a multitude of pictorial and literary references in addition to his personal memories and observations in developing ideas for his images. Film history was one such source and it is tempting to see in the present image an echo of German star Brigitte Helm as the Robot in Fritz Lang's 1927 expressionist science-fiction film Metropolis.

Gift of Hamiltons Gallery, London.

More from Photographs - 1840's to the Present. Sold to support the new London Media Space at The Science Museum
