A 'TWO PEACHES' CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER WITH JAPANESE IVORY INSETS
18TH/19TH CENTURY
The cover of the box is carved with a group of four boys at play in a garden setting pointing to a fifth boy climbing the trunk of a pine tree all on a geometric ground, a leafy plantain frames the foreground, the sides of the cover are decorated with a repeat design of the swatstika motif within a double square, the base is incised with two lotuses issuing from scrolling leafy stems, the box has two Japanese ivory insets in the form of two halves of a shell, the interior of one carved and pierced with an abstract design of a gnarled branch, the other with figures at leisure in a garden setting.
