A YELLOW JADE MYTHICAL BEAST
QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
The recumbent beast is shown facing forward with a lifted head featuring a horn, broad snout, and opened mouth exposing protruding teeth. The hair and tail of the beast are detailed with incised lines, with the long hair held back on both sides of the knobbed backbone, and the bifurcated tail swept over its hind quarters with stylised feather and ruyi designs on the thighs. The underside is carved with lines to represent the paws. The stone is of a greenish yellow tone with brown russet inclusions.
