The Eagles/Don Henley
A collection of letters and postcards written by Don Henley to a friend 1971-1972, majority hand-written and with corresponding envelopes, the letters detailing a pivotal time in Henley's career, including:
- a letter dated 12 February, 1971, ending our album [refers to Henley's first album with his first band, Shiloh] is due to be released in a couple of days and things are starting to happen. It's all getting very complex. I sometimes wish I was a little old shoemaker or something;
- a letter dated 2 March, 1971, where Henley mentions a new booking agency who are lining up some college concerts for us in April; a new Manager prospect, although Henley notes that Mrs. Rogers is a little upset. Kenny [Rogers] gets home Thurs so Fri will be the big day of decision; a week of gigs at the Troubadour Club in L.A. as second act to Mary Travers;
- a letter dated 4 June, 1971, listing all his band news including We are losing Al, our steel guitar player to the Flying Burrito Bros...Our concert was a flop...We have a concert June 25 with Delaney & Bonnie...I'm making good money playing with Ronstadt - she thinks I'm the greatest...John Baylan wants to put a "semi-super-group" with Linda and bernie Leadon (of the Burrito Bros.), Randy Meisner, Glenn Frey (of Longbranch Pennywhistle- formerly) and me...Glenn Frey is signed to David Geffen who happens to manage Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young...Glenn of course wants me to be in his "Small Frey Dance Band"...I'll stick it out with my old friends for a while longer I guess...;
- a letter dated 5 August, 1971, telling Helen tomorrow our new band consisting of me, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner (formerly of Poco) and Bernie Leadon (formerly of the Flying Burrito Bros.) have a meeting with Geffen...if we can keep this group together six months, we will have it made...;
- a letter dated 19 August, 1971, telling Helen we have just signed with the legendary David Geffen - mgr & founder of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Joni Mitchell...tomorrow we are playing privately for Ahmet Ertegun, president of Atlantic Records...;
- a letter dated 18 November, 1971, telling Helen The band is plodding on...grueling daily rehearsals usually end in a state of limbo due to differences in taste, musical opinions etc...anyway we are inextricably locked in to this thing....Our manager is getting the best record producer in the world (Glynn Johns)...
