Lot Essay

A great admirer of Géricault's work, Pierre Olivier Dubaut shared his fascination with horses and owned a large number of drawings, watercolours and paintings by the artist which focused on this subject. He distinguished his Géricault drawings from the rest of his collection by the placement of his stamp: on drawings by other artists, it was placed on the verso but on the Géricaults, as can be seen on the present sheet, the stamp was placed at the lower edge of the recto.
