Lot Essay

This portrait derives from a composition by the Italian painter Giovanni Maria Morandi (Florence 1622-1717 Rome) and his studio, now in Palazzo Chigi at Ariccia. Innocent XI was born Benedetto Odescalchi in Como in 1611 and died in Rome in 1689. He was elected pope in 1676 after fifty days of conclave. His pontificate was characterised by a strenuous defense of Catholic Counter-Reformation ideals in the face of what he saw as a progressive corruption of mores.
