Meiji period (Late 19th century), with signatures Hagiya Katsuhira (1804-1886) and with kao (cursive monogram) for the metalwork and Hokei to (Matsuki Hokei) for the lacquer
The tanto mounted in a finely carved red-lacquer (tsuishu) scabbard in low relief with the Seven Gods of Good Fortune and their treasures, the silver and inlaid gold fittings in the form of a flying phoenix worked in silver in high relief with details in gilt, the silver menuki in the shapes of a fundo (weight) and saikaku (rhinoceros horn cup), two emblems of the Eight Precious Things, signature on fuchi and kojiri
