Lot Essay

"When I started preparing for the restoration of the exterior of the Rietveld Schröder House in 1974, I had to know how the house works. I needed assurance in order to take the right decisions regarding the method of restoration later on. At that time there was no experience yet with the restoration of modern architecture. I started making a model of the exterior of the house, took it apart and put it together again. Then I knew how the house was constructed and knew the significance of the various components in the overall picture. When the restoration was finished, I put together an exhibition in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht where the maquette was shown. The maquette has been exhibited on several exhibitions in London, Dublin and Copenhagen."
