EGYPT OR TURKEY, 19TH/20TH CENTURY
The kaftan of typical form, formed of panels of green silk lampas proabably originally for use in one of the Holy Shrines, the ground divided by horizontal chevrons into a series of alternating minor and major bands of inscription in vigorous muhaqqaq, every other major band with a series of roundels and cartouches with similar inscription, with green cloth lining

Lot Essay

The inscriptions on this panel include the shahada, the names of God, Qur'an III, sura al-'Imran, v.96 and Qur'an II, sura al-baqara, v.144 (part).

A textile of the same design also made into a kaftan was sold in these Rooms 7 April 2011, lot 405.
