Harry Verelst (d. 1785) succeeded Lord Clive as Governor of Bengal in January 1767 until his resignation in December 1769. He had originally come to Bengal circa 1750 in the service of the East India Company but was taken prisoner by the Nawab of Bengal's forces in 1759. Released after the battle of Plassey, Verelst was in charge of Chittargong (1761-5) and then of Burdwan and Midnapur (1765-6) before his appointment as Governor of Bengal. He is known to have been a friend of Clive.
