Darwish 'Ali the Third, the brother of the calligrapher Mehmed Emin Efendi of Fethiye, was active under Sultan 'Abd al-Hamid I and Sultan Selim III. He studied calligraphy with 'Abd al-Qadir Hamdi Efendi,as well as with the court calligrapher Isma'il Zuhdi Efendi and Sulayman Hikmeti Efendi. His masters have followed the school of Hafiz 'Uthman (d. 1698) through his favourite pupil 'Abdullah Efendi of Yedikule (d. 1731). He passed away in Istanbul.

The colophon of this Qur'an gives the names of his masters back to Yedikuleli Sayyid 'Abdullah Efendi and states that Darwish 'Ali the Third was a pupil of Hafiz Muhammad known as Qayyim Zadeh who was the pupil of the late 'Abd al-Hakim bin al-Sayyid 'Abdullah known as Amir Efendi of Yedikule.
