Lot Essay
According to Emilie Savage-Smith "the treatise was written for the Rasulid ruler of the Yemen al-Malik al-Muzaffar Yusuf (d. 1295 AD) before he became ruler in 1249 AD following the death of his father al-Malik al-Mansur 'Umar bin 'Ali bin Rasul. Later writers have attributed the present treatise to the Rasulid ruler himself rather than to al-Hamawi. Al-Zirikli states that he saw a copy of the work in two volumes in a library in al-Ta'if with the author given as the Rasulid ruler" (Al-A'lam, Beirut, 2007, vol.5, p.324). .
