Ink on paper, with a quatrain in large, elegant black nasta'liq script within gold and polychrome illuminated panels, colophon signed and dated, in gold and coloured borders, outer margin of marbled paper illuminated with panels of gold scrolling vine on black ground

Lot Essay

Muhammad 'Ali al-Qastamuni was a descendent of Sha'ban Veli, the founder of the Sha'baniyya Khalwatiyya order of dervishes (see F. De Jong, Khalwatiyya, Encyclopaedia of Islam, Vol.IV, Leiden, (Brill), 1978, pp.991-3). This important order of dervishes had its centre in the Anatolian town of Kastamonu.
