A LARGE ILKHANID CALLIGRAPHIC LUSTRE MOULDED POTTERY TILE
IRAN, EARLY 14TH CENTURY
Of near-square form, the main register with an inscription in monumental thuluth script, highlighted in cobalt blue against a lustre background of painted scrolling floriated sprays, including a lotus flower reserved against white ground, the upper register with moulded palmettes, the reverse inscribed with old numbers, skilful repair to lower right corner, minor chips and abrasion, otherwise intact.

Lot Essay

A comparable tile was sold at Sotheby's, 5 October 2011, lot 211. Four other related tiles, although of smaller dimensions, are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (1491-1876).
