Lot Essay

For similar intaglio cf., G. Lippold, Gemmen und Kameen des Altertums und der Neuzeit, Stuttgart, 1922, p. 74, pl. LXXIV, no. 6. The elaborate hair found on this intaglio is similar to that seen on coins depicting empresses from approximately the mid-3rd to early-4th Century A.D., including Salonina wife of Gallienus.
