Lot Essay
The poem may be translated as:
'Before the corn rain and after the spring thunder,
With their colours dyed yellow the new willow leaves appear.
Men and women weave through the mountains and valleys with baskets on their backs,
Competing to pick the best tea leaves with their skilful hands.
The sun bakes the mountains and warms the clouds,
Tea leaves bearing new shoots announce the arrival of spring.
Selling the tea to businessmen in exchange for clothing and food,
Its taste never reaches the workers' lips.
Our enjoyment of the tea is lessened,
As we consider the livelihood of the peasants.
After the new silk and the new crops have all been sold,
The time has come to sell the fresh leaves.'
