Lot Essay
The present reference 6265 is possibly the earliest gold example known of this reference - making it the earliest known example of the entire Oyster Cosmograph family. In fact, in many ways it is different than the later generations of this model, most notably the dial not (yet) having the later "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" designation, but also the early chronograph pushers. According to our research, only a small handful of examples of this gold "Oyster Cosmograph" version from the earliest year of production are known amongst collectors and the fact that the present example is preserved in practically unworn condition, still retaining its factory sticker on the back, render it a very rare find.
Reference 6265 was introduced into the market in the early 1970s, simultaneously with its peers 6263 and 6264, the first "Oyster" versions of the celebrated "Cosmograph" model. Available in stainless steel, 14K and 18K gold, the models were fitted with the "screw down" chronograph buttons, the tachymeter scale engraved directly onto the bezel.
For detailed descriptions and illustrations of the different versions of reference 6265 see I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 336 - 349.
