Warhol began his career as a commercial artist for Madison Avenue after he moved to New York in the 1950s. The language of the advertisement never left Warhol's work and continued to manifest itself into the late 1980s. By this period Warhol's personal celebrity and recognizable style provided a cache for advertisers that led to commissioned artwork. These jobs also funded Warhol's more creative personal projects and paid his staff. Lots 1-10 feature a range of working materials and studies for advertisements that Warhol created or provided art for in the 1970s and 1980s. Essentially presentations of physical commercial products for a mass audience, these images show a direct link to his work in advertising in the 1950s.
